I Tried 12 Pairs of Buds — These Are the Ones I Refuse to Return I live on the D train in Brooklyn. That's not a metaphor. I spend about three hours a day underground between my apartment in Flatbush and my office in Midtown, and for those three hours I am surrounded by the full symphony of New York City transit. The Sony and Bose both have transparency modes but they sound artificial — like you're hearing the world through a microphone. The AirPods sound natural. On the street, I keep transparency on so I can hear traffic. I use them every single day. The only issue I've had is that the microphone quality on calls isn't great in windy conditions — people say I sound like I'm in a tunnel. But that's a minor complaint. They're not the best at any single thing. They're the best at everything together.
